VIBE Festival × Aleksić Gallery: Nikolina Nikolić’s “Syncopation”
As part of the contemporary art programme of the 13th edition of VIBE Festival, Aleksić Gallery presents Syncopation, a monumental sculpture by artist Nikolina Nikolić.
Created specifically for the festival setting, the work is installed at Knežev Arsenal in Kragujevac, where, from 23 to 25 July 2026, it enters into a direct relationship with music, light, industrial architecture and the movement of the audience.
Standing approximately three metres high and constructed in metal, Syncopation creates a tension between abstract structure and the suggestion of a human body. Its sharp geometric segments form a figure suspended in motion—at once unstable and monumental, and open to the surrounding space.
The title refers to syncopation: a displacement of the expected accent that alters the internal structure of rhythm. This principle is translated into the sculpture itself. Its form unfolds through interruptions, shifts in direction and precisely established relationships between individual elements, while the raw metal surface receives and reflects the changing festival lights.
In the presence of sound, the sculpture ceases to be a static object. Changes in light, perspective and musical intensity continually reshape the way it is perceived. The work is therefore not a scenographic addition to the music programme, but an autonomous artistic intervention that transforms the festival environment into a space of expanded perception.
The collaboration between VIBE Festival and Aleksić Gallery establishes a meeting point between contemporary visual art and current music culture. By moving beyond the conventional gallery setting, the artwork becomes part of a shared experience—accessible to a wider audience and exposed to movement, sound and the immediate energy of the city.
A tone embodies a form held in a liminal moment. Movement reveals its shifting states, from a form in transformation to composed monumentality. The raw surface of the metal remains open to light, while its precise geometric sequence governs sound. Sound gathers the body.
