Mirza Cizmic
BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1985 in Sarajevo, Mirza Čizmić is a visual artist whose creative path spans from early education in Bosnia and Sweden to advanced studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, where he earned both his BFA and MFA in painting. He currently lives and works in Helsinki, and his artistic practice is shaped by complex experiences of migration, transition, and identity, which he translates into a universal visual language.
Čizmić’s work is distinguished by an exploration of the fragile balance between memory and oblivion, introspection and social reality, often unfolding through symbolic and narrative layers within his paintings. His art functions as a site of confrontation—engaging both with intimate biographical traces and broader cultural and political contexts. His solo exhibitions have been presented in renowned galleries and institutions across Europe and Asia—including Artemin Gallery in Taiwan, Hang Tough Contemporary in Dublin, X Vitamin Gallery in Belgrade, and Aleksić Gallery in Kragujevac. He has also participated in numerous international group exhibitions, such as projects at the Rovaniemi Art Museum in Finland, Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami during Art Basel Week, as well as art fairs and museum shows in Paris, Seoul, and Taipei. His work has been recognized by major institutions and is included in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and the Vantaa Art Museum in Finland, as well as the Parkseobo Foundation in Seoul and the Aleksić Collection. Recipient of multiple grants and awards from Finnish cultural foundations (Taike, Frame, the Finnish Cultural Foundation), Čizmić has established himself as an artist whose practice transcends national borders and contributes to the international contemporary art dialogue.
