ABOUT

Born in 1985 in Sarajevo, Mirza Čizmić is a visual artist whose creative path spans from early education in Bosnia and Sweden to advanced studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, where he earned both his BFA and MFA in painting. He currently lives and works in Helsinki, and his artistic practice is shaped by complex experiences of migration, transition, and identity, which he translates into a universal visual language.

Čizmić’s oeuvre explores the fragile balance between memory and oblivion, introspection and social reality, often through symbolic and narrative layers built within his paintings. His art operates as a space of confrontation—addressing intimate biographical traces as well as broader cultural and political contexts. His solo exhibitions have been presented in distinguished galleries and institutions across Europe and Asia, including Artemin Gallery in Taiwan, Ama Gallery in Helsinki, and Hang Tough Contemporary in Dublin, as well as X Vitamin Gallery in Belgrade, Aleksić Gallery in Kragujevac, and as part of the Porvoo Triennale in Finland. He has also participated in numerous international group exhibitions, such as projects at the Rovaniemi Art Museum in Finland, Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami during Art Basel week, and at art fairs and museum shows in Paris, Seoul, and Taipei. Čizmić’s work is included in major collections such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and Vantaa Art Museum in Finland, as well as the Parkseobo Foundation in Seoul and the Aleksić Collection. He is the recipient of multiple grants and awards from Finnish cultural foundations (Taike, Frame, and the Finnish Cultural Foundation), affirming his position as an artist whose practice transcends national boundaries and contributes to the international artistic dialogue.
