Ema Bregović was born in Paris in 1994. She obtained her master’s degree from the School of Fine Arts in Nantes (France) in 2018. She currently lives and works between Belgrade and Paris. As an artist whose roots are tied to a country that no longer exists - former Yugoslavia - Ema explores a world shaped by unresolved tensions, shifting identities, and multilayered meanings. Her work delves into questions of borders, transgression, religion, and ideological divides. Her heritage has deeply influenced the subjects she explores. Unable to reconcile her fragmented roots, she uses art as a form of dialogue with her own complex identities, invisible boundaries, and fluid geographies that continue to challenge the human search for meaning. Her works reflect this inner tension and duality, marked by ambiguity, multiplicity, and internal dissonance. These elements are in constant interplay with the physical nature of the objects she creates and their subversive meanings. Ema deliberately provokes her audience, encouraging them to confront the contradictions between the materials she uses, the forms she presents, and the meanings she assigns. The alienation of how we perceive everyday objects, along with the exploration of their symbolic forms, has become central to her artistic approach. Her most notable works portray a synesthetic harmony between poetry and violence, embodying a personal and collective search for peace, unity, and lost symbiosis. Through her fresh, emotionally powerful, and mature artistic voice, Ema Bregović examines the role of politics, religion, and social values in art. These themes, which continue to provoke and divide, become platforms in her work for opening new dialogues and interpretations within the contemporary artistic and social landscape.
