ABOUT

Born on February 29, 1964, in Kragujevac, belongs to a generation of painters whose work does not strive to- ward form but toward the inner experience of being. His painting is not a representation of the visible; it is an act of introspection — a process in which the figure is not depicted but transformed, where color becomes the tangible residue of emotion. Throughout his career, Jović has searched for a pictorial language that does not describe the external world but translates states of consciousness into matter.

His oeuvre unfolds through several stages, yet it remains unwaveringly loyal to one central idea — the dia- lectic between light and darkness, between being and its shadow. In his early works, psychological tension permeates both faces and atmospheres, while in the Crucifixion cycle, the figure becomes a symbol — not crucified upon a cross, but upon its own awareness. Vertical compositions, reduced anatomy, and the ten- sion of light and dark contrasts speak of the perpetual duality between good and evil, of the inner conflict that defines human existence. In his most recent works, Jović turns toward radical reduction — a distilled line, a nearly bichromatic palette of black and white, punctuated only by carefully placed traces of blue, red, or yellow. This restraint is not aus- terity but discipline — an act of refinement. In Jović’s vision, black and white are not opposites but poles of the same energy, constantly oscillating between balance and dissolution. The minimalist composition of his paint- ings attests to the maturity of an artist who understands that art speaks most fully when it nearly falls silent. Over the decades, Jović has exhibited widely across Europe — from Belgrade, Kragujevac, and Požarevac to Hamburg, Vienna, and Salzburg — and has received numerous awards for painting, including the ITART 2001: 3rd Mini Graphic & Painting World Wide Show Prize in Pisa, Italy. He is a member of ULUPUDS (Association of Applied Arts Artists and Designers of Serbia) and has held the status of an independent artist since 2005. Today, Duci Jović occupies a distinctive place within contemporary Serbian painting — as an artist who gath- ers both pain and serenity within a single gesture, who captures energy and silence within the same form. His works mirror an inner necessity, that same spiritual imperative of which Kandinsky once spoke, standing as quiet testimonies of an artist who paints not to depict the world, but to find within it his own crucifixion.
